The holidays can bring a little stress and anxiety between all of the activities, Christmas shopping, guests, and all of regular “stuff” that still has to happen on a day-to-day basis. Needless to say, things can get a bit crazy! Keeping up with it all, especially household cleaning, can sometimes feel overwhelming. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be cleaning when there are so many other fun things to do. In order to hopefully save you some time and energy this holiday season, I’ve partnered with Bona to put together some easy tips on how to keep your home clean during the holidays. Having a simple plan in place can really make a big difference and help you to really enjoy the true meaning of the season!
Involve the whole family
I’m lucky enough to have a 5 year old that begs to clean, so this one comes pretty easy. Have a designated time each day that the whole family contributes to straightening up and cleaning the house. It’s amazing what you can get done in under 30mins when everyone pitches in! Give specific tasks to each family member that you know they can do well. Try to stick to the same time each day so it becomes more of a habit. Remind everyone that the more they help out, the more time you’ll have to enjoy all of the holiday activities together.
Deep clean as you decorate
I like to deep clean as I’m putting up our Christmas decorations. Things like wiping down walls, vacuuming, washing windows and dusting, even cleaning the baseboards to make it feel fresh in here. It typically gets us through the holidays and then I do it all again when we put the holiday decorations away in January.
Keep a “catch-all” basket for putting things away
With kids around, things can get out of hand pretty quickly. I like to keep a large basket or bin at the bottom of our stairs to stash items in that need to go back upstairs. It’s especially helpful when I have visitors show up last minute, I can quickly go around the house gathering everything that’s on the floor and throw it into the basket. Having it contained and out of sight helps with the straightening up and make it’s super easy to get it put away later after your company leaves.
Tidy up as you go
This is my cleaning MO. I’m always going room to room tidying behind people, but I think it’s even more important now during the holidays. I try to convince my husband that getting into this good practice makes it so much easier to clean as you go than to have to go back and deal with an even bigger mess later. I like to get in the habit of putting all of the little things away as soon as we’re done using them. If you can get the rest of your family to do the same, it’ll be key to keeping the impending chaos in check when you start to have guests arrive. It only takes 1-2 minutes to do and it’ll save yourself a lot of time and energy in the end!
Take 30mins each day to clean the floors
